Sir Freddie at Laker Airways

Sir Freddie Laker was the charismatic face of Laker Airways, and his personal presence was integral to the airline's identity. From the inaugural Skytrain flight in September 1977 to the daily operations at Gatwick Airport, Sir Freddie was a hands-on leader who could often be found greeting passengers, inspecting aircraft, and rallying his staff.

These photographs capture Sir Freddie in his element at Laker Airways Skytrain — shaking hands with passengers on the tarmac, posing beside the airline's distinctive DC-10 aircraft, addressing the media, and celebrating milestones. His infectious enthusiasm and genuine warmth come through in every image, helping to explain why he became one of the most beloved figures in British aviation.
